"1989년도 학술진흥재단 번역지원사업으로 이 책이 선정될 당시만 해도, 우리나라 사회과학계의 대부분의 소장학자들은 정통 맑스이론에 심취해 있을 때였다. 분석 맑스주의를 소개하는 것 자체가 불경스럽게 여겨졌고, 사회이론에서, 특히 맑스 이론에서 행위이론의 중요성을 이야기하는 것에 귀를 기울이는 학생들이 거의 없었다. 당연히 이 책에 대한 수요가 없을 것이라고 예측되는 상황이었다. 그러나 1991년 교보문고에서 번역본을 출판한 지 1년이 안되어 절판이 되어 번역자를 놀라게 했다. 5년 동안 절판의 공백을 뒤로하고 이 책을 다시 출판하게 된 지금, 그간의 역사적 변동과 학문적 변화의 크기와 폭을 생각하면, 우리가 살고 있는 세대가 얼마나 격동의 세대인가를 알 수 있다. 동구권의 몰락과 더불은 맑스주의의 쇠퇴, 그리고 빈자리를 급속하게 메우며 부상하는 문화이론은 학문적 지조란 무엇일까를 질문하게 한다. 앞으로 5년 후의 학문적 판도는 어떻게 변해 있을까?"A. 칼리니코스, 김용학 역, [역사와 행위] 중 '옮긴이 서문'

허접스러운 책에 대해 그럴듯한 서평을 한다는 것이 과연 가능한 일인가. 내용을 요약하는 것조차 짜증이 난다.
